Esports Awards 2024 used Rundown Studio, a tool @iamjohnbarker and I released 1 year ago. Let me share a little how we got here: (spoiler: no PH launch, no mailing list)
-
Step 1: Both of us had our own products in the live production space (John with h2r.graphics and me with stagetimer.io). We became friends through John's discord server and talked often.
-
Step 2: John asked me to join his project to build a new rundown tool. People complained that they often pay $6000+/year for the incumbent ShoFlo. I said no.
-
Step 3: John was persistent and convinced me. Our expertise combined well. He did production gigs himself and already had a strong community. I had more experience with software development and timezones.
-
Step 4: First month we built a throw-away MVP with firebase and the worst react code you've ever seen.
-
Step 5: Then we lined up 3 user interviews and let them play with the prototype cold turkey. We learned A TON about what users actually need.
-
Step 6: The MVP got binned and we took ~5 months to build the tool properly.
-
Step 7: We launched. Not on PH. Not to a mailing list. But on 3-4 livestreams and podcasts of other live production folk.
-
We hit the $1000 MRR target 4 months after launch. Compared to the 10 months it took me with Stagetimer. Full Esports Awards case study: rundownstudio.app/blog/use-case-esports-awards/
