      1. The first problem was not keyword research, or article word count, or a content calendars. No. Just one simple question: Who needs my thing? Stagetimer was hideous and had only a single feature: Count time in the browser. My assumption: Video producers and event managers!

        2. But the next question is the most important: What do these people care about? Once you know that, the rest becomes easy! I went on Reddit to find them and see what they talk about. I even posted my thing and got direct feedback. Invaluable when you are at 0.

          3. Next I created a landing page. It was not pretty, but it addressed the main points my users wanted to know. No WordPress or fancy stuff. I made it in plain HTML. 👉web.archive.org/web/20201230064346/https://stagetimer.io/

            4. I wanted some stats to look at. So I went to search.google.com/search-console/ and registered my domain there. It tells you how people find you on Google. And, most importantly, what search terms they use. But it will take a few months before you see real data.

              5. In the meantime I added a second landing page. More surface for SEO 💪 Even wrote an entire thread about it (that nobody read): @_lhermann/1428025421199720455 Did it work? No. This page never saw many clicks. 🤷‍♂️ Turns out, "Studios" were not interested.

                6. Out of ideas, we used our first revenue to contract @JIC94 to do keyword research and write 3 articles. Two of these articles are our top pages to this day. 👉 It takes ~3 months for pages to rank 👉 Articles with how-to's, examples and freebies work well

                  7. Documentation Documentation is great: 👉 Answers user questions 👉 Includes many keywords related to your product Best practice: 👍 Not on a subdomain 👍 Use simple language 👍 Many pictures (with alt-text) 3 out of our Top 10 pages are non-SEO-optimized doc pages!

                      9. You remember step 4, the Google Search Console? After some month passed I went back to check what keywords we rank for. Then use their language to your advantage. Like "presentation time online" instead of "cloud-based timer solution".
